Zohran Mamdani Responds to Trump’s Deportation Threat After Primary Win

02 July, 2025 13:12

Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, is pushing back against comments made by President Donald Trump, who threatened to have him arrested and deported.

The 33-year-old state assemblyman made headlines on Saturday, June 28, after issuing a strong statement. “The President of the United States just threatened to have me arrested, stripped of my citizenship, put in a detention camp, and deported,” Mamdani said. “Not because I’ve broken any law, but because I refuse to let ICE terrorize our city.”

What Trump Said About Zohran Mamdani

Trump’s comments came during a press tour of the Alligator Alcatraz migrant detention center in Florida on Tuesday. When asked about Mamdani, Trump replied: “Well, then we’ll have to arrest him. We don’t need a communist in this country. But if we have one, I’m going to be watching him very carefully on behalf of the nation.”

He continued, claiming, “A lot of people are saying he’s here illegally. Ideally, he’s going to be less than a communist. But right now, that’s a communist, not a socialist.”

Mamdani’s Background

Mamdani was born in Uganda to Indian parents. He moved to New York when he was seven years old and became a U.S. citizen in 2018. He currently serves as a New York State assemblyman and has long been an outspoken critic of aggressive immigration policies and police overreach.

Just last week, Mamdani shocked political observers by defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary, making him the party’s official nominee for the 2025 NYC mayoral election.

Mamdani’s Response: A Warning for All New Yorkers

Mamdani says Trump’s words are more than political attacks. “His statements don’t just represent an attack on our democracy,” he said, “but also send a message to every New Yorker who refuses to hide in the shadows: if you speak up, they will come for you.”

Mamdani has long been a progressive voice for immigrant rights, police reform, and affordable housing. His growing popularity among young voters and immigrant communities has become a key part of his campaign.

Immigration, Race, and the 2025 Mayor’s Race

Trump’s remarks reflect growing tension in national politics over immigration, citizenship rights, and the role of local leaders who challenge federal policies. The reference to Mamdani’s heritage and citizenship status has sparked criticism from civil rights groups and lawmakers, calling Trump’s comments “racist and undemocratic.”

Mamdani’s team has confirmed he remains focused on winning the general election in November. His campaign said, “This only proves why we need bold leadership in New York.”
