Russia Urges Calm After Border Clash Between Afghanistan and Pakistan

14 October, 2025 20:55

Russia has expressed serious concern over the recent escalation of violence along the Afghan-Pakistani border, which took place between October 10 and 11. The clashes reportedly included exchanges of heavy gunfire and airstrikes, particularly across the Pashtun tribal belt, resulting in casualties on both sides.

Both Kabul and Islamabad shared different versions of the incident. Afghan officials accused Pakistan of initiating cross-border attacks, while Pakistani sources claimed it was a response to provocations from the Afghan side. The lack of a unified explanation has created uncertainty and tension in the region.

Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, released an official statement urging both nations to avoid further violence. She emphasized the need for restraint and encouraged both governments to settle disputes through political and diplomatic dialogue rather than military actions.

Russia acknowledged initial reports suggesting the situation is gradually stabilising. Moscow welcomed this development and reaffirmed its support for peaceful communication between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Russia highlighted the importance of constructive dialogue, especially on sensitive issues such as counterterrorism and regional security. Moscow considers both Afghanistan and Pakistan as friendly states and hopes they will restore mutual trust and cooperation.

Although final numbers have not been confirmed, early reports mention casualties among security personnel on both sides. The violence affected several locations near the border, raising fears among local communities living in the tribal areas.

International observers are closely monitoring the situation, as instability in this region can have wider implications across South and Central Asia. Diplomatic efforts are expected to increase in the coming days to prevent further escalation.
