Police Brutality in India: Female Doctor Ends Life After Abuse
MUMBAI: A tragic incident has been reported from Satara district in Maharashtra, where a female government doctor died by suicide after allegedly facing sexual harassment and assault by a police officer.
According to Indian media reports, the doctor wrote a note on her palm, accusing a police officer named Gopal of harassing and sexually assaulting her for the past five months. She also mentioned another man, Prashant Banker, accusing him of causing her mental distress.
Following the incident, authorities have suspended the police officer, and raids are underway to arrest both accused individuals. The victim’s body has been shifted to a hospital for postmortem examination.
The woman’s cousin told media that she had been under pressure from the police for a long time and was being forced to prepare false postmortem reports.
The case has sparked outrage across Maharashtra, with calls for strict action against those responsible and for stronger protections for women professionals working in government institutions.
