When will America’s asylum doors open again? Signals Deep Freeze

01 December, 2025 09:58

President Donald Trump has signaled that the United States could suspend asylum processing for a prolonged period, representing another major shift in the administration’s stance on immigration.

During remarks to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump linked the potential freeze to a recent security incident near the White House involving Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting that targeted National Guard members. When asked how long the asylum pause might last, Trump said the nation has “enough problems,” adding, “No time limit,” and noting the suspension could continue “for a long time”.

Stronger Emphasis on Security

The comments reflect one of Trump’s clearest efforts yet to directly connect immigration restrictions with national security concerns. While he did not specify which countries might be affected, he suggested the list could surpass 19. He singled out Somalia and other places he characterized as “unfriendly” or “out of control”, arguing that individuals from states lacking effective law enforcement or functional governance would face intensified vetting.

“They shouldn’t be in our country,” Trump said, asserting that risks associated with certain regions were too great for the U.S. to “frankly need”.

The White House has not released specific guidance regarding timelines or legal mechanisms for the proposed halt. However, officials say the administration plans to concentrate on enhanced security checks and more stringent screening procedures as agencies rework their policies.

National Guard Members to Be Honored

The shooting has returned attention to the National Guard. Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains in critical condition with serious injuries, while Specialist Sarah Beckstrom died following the attack. Trump stated that both service members would be recognized at the White House.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also addressed the incident, calling Beckstrom’s death a devastating consequence linked to past immigration decisions. Lakanwal entered the United States in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, a program created after the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The episode has reignited political tensions. Trump and senior administration figures have pointed to policies under former President Joe Biden, claiming earlier border and refugee processes lacked adequate safeguards.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that asylum processing for Afghan nationals has been halted indefinitely while a broader security review of immigration pathways is conducted.
