Green Card Lottery Halted Following Brown University Attack

20 December, 2025 12:05

The United States announced the suspension of the green card lottery program following the shooting incident at Brown University.

US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said the suspect in the Brown University shooting used the green card lottery program to come to the United States.

The US Green Card Lottery Program is actually called the Diversity Visa (DV) Program. It is an official immigration program of the US government that aims to provide citizens of countries around the world with the opportunity to permanently reside in the US, from which immigration rates to the US have been low.

Under this program, approximately 50,000 people are awarded green cards through a lottery each year, allowing them to live, work, and later become eligible for citizenship in the United States.

It should be noted that a few days ago, there was a shooting incident at Brown University and MIT. The suspect, Portuguese citizen Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, came to the United States in 2017 under the Diversity Visa Lottery Program and was given a green card.

Claudio Neves , 48, is accused of shooting at Brown University, killing two students and wounding nine others, while an MIT professor was also killed in the incident.
