A powerful explosion at a nursing home in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania, has left at least two people dead, injured several others, and trapped multiple residents inside the building, according to authorities.
Officials said the blast occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Bristol Health and Rehab Center, located approximately 30 minutes from Philadelphia. Emergency services rushed to the scene as flames and thick black smoke engulfed parts of the facility.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro described the incident as devastating during a press briefing. He stated that firefighters used ladders to access the building and rescue residents, while police officers carried some individuals to safety, at times evacuating two people simultaneously.
Rescue officials reported that at least five individuals were initially listed as missing following the explosion. However, authorities believe some residents may have left the area with family members on their own. Local police characterized the incident as a major casualty event.
Videos shared by witnesses and local media showed severe structural damage to the nursing home, including shattered windows, collapsed sections of the roof, and extensive fire damage.
Preliminary reports suggest a gas leak may have caused the explosion. The local gas company confirmed receiving reports of a gas odor at the time of the incident, prompting the immediate shutdown of gas and electricity supplies. Investigations into the exact cause are ongoing.
During rescue operations, displaced residents were moved to a nearby school that was set up as a reunification center, allowing families to locate and meet their loved ones. Authorities said efforts are underway to confirm the total number of injured and assess their conditions.
State and federal leaders expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, which has cast a shadow over the local community just days before Christmas.
