Zelensky Rejects Russia’s Claim of Drone Attack on Putin Residence

30 December, 2025 12:32

President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected Russia’s claims that Ukraine executed a drone strike on one of President Vladimir Putin’s residences and has accused Moscow of attempting to disrupt peace negotiations.

Sergei Lavrov, the Foreign Minister of Russia, asserted that Kyiv had carried out an overnight strike with 91 long-range unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) targeting Putin’s state residence in the Novgorod region of northwestern Russia.

Russia announced that it would now reassess its stance in peace talks. At the time of the alleged attack, Putin’s location remains uncertain.

Zelensky rejected the assertion as “typical Russian lies” aimed at providing the Kremlin with a justification to keep assaulting Ukraine.

He stated that Russia had aimed at government buildings in Kyiv before.

Zelensky stated on X: “It is vital that the world does not remain silent at this moment. We must not permit Russia to sabotage efforts to attain a lasting peace.

Lavrov stated in a Monday Telegram post that all 91 drones he alleged were launched at Putin’s residence were intercepted and destroyed by Russian air defense systems.

He mentioned that there had been no reports of injuries or damage due to the attack.

He stated, “In light of the complete degeneration of the criminal Kyiv regime, which has adopted a policy of state terrorism, Russia’s negotiating position will be reassessed.”

However, he noted that Russia did not plan to withdraw from negotiations with the US, according to Russian news agency Tass.

Moscow’s assertion follows discussions between the US and Ukraine in Florida on Sunday, during which Presidents Trump and Zelensky reviewed a modified peace plan aimed at concluding the conflict.

After the meeting, Zelensky informed Fox News on Monday that there was a “possibility to finish this war” by 2026.

However, he stated that Ukraine could not achieve victory in the war without assistance from the US.

Zelensky stated, “My sentiments regarding President Trump’s sanctions and economic measures demonstrate his readiness to take very bold actions.” In this context, the U.S. can expedite the movement toward peace.

In an interview with Fox News, the Ukrainian president stated that there were no signs of Putin wanting peace and expressed a lack of trust in him.

Zelensky added, “I don’t trust Putin, and he doesn’t wish for Ukraine’s success.”

Zelensky stated that the US had proposed 15-year security guarantees for Ukraine, with Trump remarking that an agreement on this matter was “close to 95%” completed.

The leader of Ukraine characterized territorial issues and the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant as the final unresolved matters, with little indication of advancement regarding the future of Ukraine’s contested Donbas region, which Russia aims to completely capture.

Moscow currently governs roughly 75% of the Donetsk region and about 99% of the adjacent Luhansk region. Both areas are referred to together as Donbas.

Russia has turned down essential components of the plan being discussed in the past.

After the US-Ukraine discussions, the White House announced on Monday that President Trump had “concluded a positive call” with Putin.
