02 February, 2026 16:17

Ella Day Brooke, a 22-year-old Australian tourist, has died after a tragic ski lift accident at a popular ski resort in central Japan.

The incident occurred at Tsugaike Mountain Resort in Otari village, located in Nagano Prefecture, a well-known destination for winter sports.

What Happened at the Ski Resort

According to resort officials, the accident happened as Ella Day Brooke was getting off a ski lift.

Her backpack became caught on the chairlift, causing her to be dragged across the snow and lifted into the air.

Resort staff explained that the waist buckle of her backpack was not fastened, while the chest strap remained secured. This prevented the backpack from coming loose.

As a result, she was unable to free herself from the lift.

Emergency Response and Hospitalization

A lift attendant quickly noticed the incident and pressed the emergency stop button.

Brooke was rescued within minutes and transported to hospital by ambulance.

Despite receiving emergency medical treatment, she suffered cardiac arrest and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Australian Government Confirms Death

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) confirmed Brooke’s death.

In a brief statement, the department said it is providing consular assistance to her family.

The department also offered condolences and said no further information could be released due to privacy concerns.

Resort Apology and Investigation Launched

Following the incident, Tsugaike Mountain Resort and the Tsugaike Gondola Lift Company issued a joint public apology.

They confirmed that an official investigation has been launched to determine how the accident occurred.

The investigation will also review safety procedures and equipment guidelines at the resort.

Safety Concerns Raised

The tragic incident has raised renewed concerns about ski lift safety.

Experts are reminding visitors to ensure that backpacks, straps, and equipment are properly secured before boarding or exiting chairlifts.

Ski resorts across Japan are expected to closely review their safety protocols following the accident.
