Iran criticizes UN chief for downplaying US-Israeli attacks
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman has strongly criticized the secretary-general of the United Nations for what he called a weak response to the recent US-Israeli attacks on Iran.
Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei made these remarks in a message addressed to António Guterres on Friday in a post on X.
‘Let’s call a spade a spade’
Baghaei started his message by asking the UN chief to describe the situation more clearly.
“Let’s call a spade a spade,” he wrote, saying the situation should not simply be described as “fighting.” He stressed that Iran was facing a planned attack.
“This is not ‘the fighting’; this is an ‘unprovoked act of aggression’ launched by two nuclear armed regimes against Iran.”
Baghaei also pointed out that the attacks happened while diplomatic talks were taking place between Tehran and Washington. He said a similar situation occurred during another Israeli-American attack on Iran last June.
“We WERE in ‘serious diplomatic negotiations’ while the U.S./Israel attacked Iran, for a second time during the past 9 months.”
Criticism over focus on economy
The Iranian spokesman also criticized the UN chief for focusing on the possible damage to the global economy instead of the deaths of civilians in Iran.
“You are concerned about ‘grave risk to the global economy’; what about the innocent civilians, including 175 little angels slaughtered in the City of Minab, and many more killed and maimed across Iran during the past 7 days of American/Israeli criminal acts?!”
The children killed in the city of Minab, located in Iran’s southern Hormozgan province, are among more than 1,100 people reported killed since the attacks began last Saturday.
Call for UN action
Baghaei ended his message by urging the United Nations to take a clearer and stronger position on the situation.
“The UN shall be forthright and shoulder its legal and moral responsibilities regarding this illegal war on Iran.”
