The issue began in July 2020 when Sherry Bren, former executive director of the South Dakota Appraiser Certification Program, met with Noem and Kassidy regarding her application. Bren stated that Kassidy’s application had significant deficiencies, and applicants are typically given only two opportunities to correct errors. However, Kassidy was granted a third chance, which later fueled suspicions of undue influence.

After four months, Kassidy’s license was approved. Yet, the ensuing public inquiry reportedly led her to leave the profession. In a letter, Kassidy expressed her frustration over the impact on her career, stating:

“I’m angry and I can acknowledge that this has successfully destroyed my business. My business is finished, and the years I spent working to become licensed amount to nothing. So, I’ve decided that I will no longer accept new appraisal orders and will wrap up the few pending orders I do have.”

Despite reports indicating there was evidence suggesting Kristi’s involvement, no formal action was taken against her. Kassidy acknowledged that being in the public eye due to her mother’s position meant facing potential fallout, leaving her with the difficult choice of enduring public scrutiny or stepping back from her career.
