US Declares Afghanistan a “State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention,” Demands Release of American Citizens

10 March, 2026 09:21

March 10, 2026 — The United States has taken a strong diplomatic step against the ruling authorities in Afghanistan. The US government has officially designated the country as a “State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention.”

The announcement was made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a public statement. He accused the Taliban administration of detaining people without proper legal grounds.

The decision is expected to increase international pressure on the Taliban government and could affect diplomatic relations between Washington and Kabul.

Marco Rubio Announces New US Designation

In his statement, Marco Rubio said the United States is deeply concerned about people being held in Afghanistan without fair legal procedures.

Rubio said he is formally designating Afghanistan as a state responsible for wrongful detention of individuals.

He stated that such actions violate international norms and human rights principles.

According to Rubio, the United States will continue to monitor the situation closely and work with partners to address the issue.

US Accuses Taliban of Using Detentions for Political Pressure

Rubio also accused the Taliban of using detentions as a way to gain political advantages.

He said the group continues to use pressure tactics and intimidation to push for policy concessions from other countries.

The US Secretary of State warned that such actions would only increase international criticism and isolation.

He added that the strategy would not succeed in changing global opinion.

Call for Immediate Release of US Citizens

The United States also demanded the immediate release of American citizens who are currently being held in Afghanistan.

Rubio specifically mentioned Dennis Coyle and Mahmood Habibi.

He said both men should be freed without delay.

The US government believes these individuals are being detained unfairly.

Officials in Washington say they will continue diplomatic efforts to secure their release.

Growing Tensions Between Washington and Kabul

The designation marks another sign of rising tensions between the United States and the Taliban authorities.

Since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021, relations with Western governments have remained complicated.

Many countries have raised concerns about human rights, political freedoms, and legal protections under the current administration.

The latest US decision could further increase international pressure on the Taliban leadership.

Diplomatic experts say the situation may influence future negotiations and global engagement with Afghanistan.
