US ‘Doomsday Planes’ deployed to Middle East over World War 3 concerns: Fact check
Claims have been circulating on social media suggesting that the United States has deployed nuclear-capable “Doomsday planes” to the Middle East amid rising tensions in the Israel-US-Iran conflict. The speculation followed a Daily Mail report about unusual flight activity involving the US Navy’s E-6B Mercury aircraft, raising fears of a potential World War 3 scenario.
The report noted multiple launches of the E-6B Mercury since February 28. On March 2, two flights were reportedly observed over the US. One aircraft flew from the Gulf Coast and landed at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland, while another flew from and returned to Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska.
Following this report, some social media posts claimed that the planes had been sent to the Middle East as tensions escalated in the Gulf region.
Fact Check: No Deployment to the Middle East
Available flight-tracking data and defense monitoring sources show that these claims are misleading. The E-6B Mercury aircraft was not deployed to the Middle East. Open-source tracking shows that the plane was operating from Norway and moving toward the Arctic region as part of Operation ICE CAMP, a regular US military exercise in the Arctic.
Operation ICE CAMP is designed to test Arctic warfare capabilities and improve coordination with US Navy submarines under the polar ice. The E-6B Mercury plays a key communication role during these exercises.
There is currently no credible evidence that the aircraft has been sent to the Middle East or is connected to the Israel-US-Iran conflict.
What Is the ‘Doomsday Plane’?
The E-6B Mercury is called a “Doomsday Plane” because it serves as an airborne command center during national emergencies. It allows the US president and top military leaders to communicate with nuclear forces even if ground-based networks are destroyed.
Equipped with advanced antennas and communication systems, the plane can transmit signals to nuclear-armed submarines deep underwater and connect with satellites, missile facilities, and command centers. Its main mission, Take Charge and Move Out (TACAMO), ensures that orders from US leadership can reach Navy nuclear submarines even if conventional communication systems fail.
While the flights sparked online speculation, there is no proof that the United States has sent “Doomsday planes” to the Middle East. The activity appears linked to Arctic military exercises under Operation ICE CAMP, not tensions in the Gulf region.
