Pakistan Calls for Ceasefire at UN Security Council, Warns of Humanitarian and Economic Fallout in Middle East

12 March, 2026 08:07

Pakistan urged an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, warning that continued conflict could cause severe humanitarian and economic damage across the region.

Speaking at the session, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said the escalating conflict was affecting not only the countries directly involved but also millions of people across the region.

“This is a conflict that should never have happened,” the ambassador told the council. He stressed that only dialogue and negotiations can prevent further civilian casualties and regional instability.

Pakistan Urges Immediate End to Hostilities

Pakistan called for an immediate and complete ceasefire and urged all parties to return to diplomatic talks.

Ambassador Ahmad warned that violations of international law threaten global peace. He said any use of force outside the principles of the UN Charter must be condemned.

“When international law is violated, peace is put at risk,” he told council members.

Support for Bahrain and Russia Draft Resolutions

Pakistan announced its support for two draft resolutions currently being discussed at the council.

One proposal was introduced by Bahrain and another by the Russia.

The ambassador thanked both countries for presenting proposals aimed at reducing tensions and encouraging negotiations.

Solidarity With Gulf Countries

Pakistan’s vote in favor of Bahrain’s resolution was described as a sign of solidarity with several Gulf nations. These include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan.

The Pakistani envoy condemned attacks targeting civilians and critical infrastructure in these countries.

He noted that many of these states had supported diplomacy and peaceful engagement, yet still faced attacks during the crisis.

Impact on Pakistanis in the Gulf

Ambassador Ahmad also highlighted the impact of the conflict on Pakistani citizens living in the Gulf region.

According to the envoy, at least two Pakistani nationals were killed in attacks in the United Arab Emirates.

Millions of Pakistanis working across Gulf countries could also face risks if the conflict continues.

Energy and Travel Disruptions

The conflict has also affected Pakistan’s economy. The ambassador said fuel supplies have been disrupted due to regional instability.

As a result, the government has been forced to take special measures to conserve oil, gas, and electricity.

Several aviation routes have also been affected, with some flights suspended while others are experiencing delays.

Call for Diplomacy and Mediation

Pakistan welcomed ongoing mediation efforts by different countries trying to reduce tensions in the region.

The ambassador said Pakistan remains in contact with regional and international partners and supports every initiative aimed at restoring peace.

He emphasized that restoring trust and returning to negotiations is the only path toward long-term stability.

Pakistan Reiterates Call for De-Escalation

In his closing remarks, the envoy urged all sides to exercise restraint and avoid further military actions.

“All sides must immediately de-escalate and return to diplomacy for a negotiated and lasting solution,” he said.

The situation in the Middle East remains tense, and the international community continues to monitor developments closely.
