Croatia Faces Cooler Spells as Rare Spring Polar Vortex Hits Europe in April
Croatia and parts of Europe may experience unusual chilly spells this April as a rare spring polar vortex persists. Typically weakening in the upper atmosphere with the arrival of spring, the vortex still holds cold Arctic air in its lower layers, capable of sending brief bursts of colder weather southward, according to meteorologists.
Despite early April bringing relatively mild temperatures close to seasonal averages across Europe, the second week could see a shift. Forecast models indicate that a combination of low-pressure systems and high-pressure over northern Europe may allow colder air to reach central and southeastern regions, including Croatia.
Temperatures in affected areas could drop 5°C to 10°C below seasonal norms, potentially bringing cooler days and unsettled weather. Inland parts of Croatia may also see increased cloud cover, rain, and cooler nights during this temporary cold spell.
Rainfall patterns are expected to vary, with central and western Europe receiving above-average precipitation, while northern regions stay drier under stable high-pressure systems. By late April, the polar vortex is expected to weaken further, and temperatures are likely to return closer to seasonal averages.
Meteorologists caution that while long-range forecasts remain uncertain, the lingering influence of the polar vortex could result in unexpected cooler periods and variable weather conditions throughout spring.
