Europe Speeds Up Defense Plan Amid US NATO Exit Concerns

The American newspaper The Wall Street Journal has said in its report that there is a fear of a possible withdrawal of the United States from NATO, which has forced Europe to accelerate an alternative defense plan.

According to the American newspaper, under the concept of a ‘European NATO,’ preparations are being made for European countries to assume a greater role in command and control. The aim of the plan is not to replace NATO but to maintain continuity in the event of a US withdrawal.

The American newspaper claimed that a historic change in German policy played a key role in implementing the plan. Trump’s statements, threats to leave NATO, and the seizure of Greenland further increased European concerns.

Moreover, the differences between the United States and Europe over the Iran war have severely affected transatlantic relations. European countries are trying to fill gaps in key areas such as air defense, logistics, intelligence, and military leadership. Restoring compulsory military service and increasing defense production are also part of the plan.

Furthermore, the biggest challenge is to develop an alternative to the American nuclear umbrella and satellite/intelligence system. The initial discussions between France and Germany on the expansion of European nuclear defense are the most sensitive aspect of the new strategy.
