Deadly Fire at Firecracker Factory in Tamil Nadu Kills 20
At least 20 people have died and six others were injured after a fire broke out at a firecracker factory in southern India on Sunday, according to police officials.
The incident occurred in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu, a region known for its firecracker manufacturing units. Local police chief N Shreenatha confirmed the fatalities, stating, “20 people are confirmed dead” following the blaze at a licensed facility.
Emergency responders continued rescue operations at the site, while authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire. Officials indicated that investigations are ongoing.
Industrial accidents remain a recurring issue in India, often linked to lapses in safety protocols and enforcement challenges. The latest tragedy has once again drawn attention to working conditions in hazardous industries.
Reacting to the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, describing the event as “deeply distressing” and offering support to the victims’ families. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin termed the deaths “tragic” and conveyed his “immense sorrow” in a statement.
The fire comes amid a series of recent industrial accidents across the country, including a deadly explosion at a power plant earlier this week and another fire at a fireworks facility last month, both of which resulted in significant loss of life.
