US Plans Limited-Edition Passport Featuring Donald Trump Image

29 April, 2026 09:37

The United States is preparing to introduce a limited-edition passport that will feature an image of Donald Trump, marking a major break from longstanding governmental norms.

Officials confirmed on Tuesday that an image of Donald Trump will soon appear in some US passports, a move described as part of commemorations for the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence.

The State Department said it would release the special passport edition to celebrate the historic milestone. The design includes a stern image of Trump placed over the Declaration of Independence dated July 4, 1776, with his signature appearing in gold beneath it.

The department also revealed a second version of the commemorative passport, featuring a historic illustration of the US Founding Fathers.

“As the United States celebrates America’s 250th anniversary in July, the State Department is preparing to release a limited number of specially designed US passports to commemorate this historic occasion,” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said.

An unnamed official stated that the Trump-themed passports would only be available through in-person appointments in Washington and “for as long as there is availability,” with no additional cost to applicants.

It remains unclear whether citizens will be able to opt out of the Trump image, though most Americans typically obtain passports through local post offices, which will not issue the special edition.

The decision has sparked political backlash. Critics from the Democratic Party accused the administration of prioritizing symbolism over governance. “Secretary Rubio should spend more time convincing his boss to end his war of choice in Iran, and less on wasting American tax dollars indulging Trump’s vanity,” Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee wrote on X.

Observers note that most countries that include artwork in passports typically feature landscapes or historical imagery. Even authoritarian states like North Korea do not include leader portraits in passports, instead using national symbols such as Mount Paektu.

Current US passports feature historical references such as the Moon landing and the Statue of Liberty, rather than political figures.

Since returning to office, Trump has increasingly placed his name and image on government-related institutions, including federal buildings and cultural organizations. His signature is also expected to appear on US currency, according to earlier announcements by the Treasury Department.

The development comes amid ongoing political debate in Washington, with critics arguing that the move blurs the line between national identity and political branding.
