Iran Warns US Interference in Strait of Hormuz Maritime Regime Will Breach Ceasefire

04 May, 2026 09:50

A senior Iranian parliamentarian has strongly warned that any US involvement in the newly established maritime framework of the Strait of Hormuz will be treated as a breach of the ceasefire agreement between the two sides.

Ebrahim Azizi, who heads the Iranian parliament’s foreign policy and national security commission, issued the warning in a post on social media on Sunday.

“Any American interference in the new maritime regime of the Strait of Hormuz will be considered a violation of the ceasefire,” Azizi wrote.

He further criticized US President Donald Trump’s statements regarding maritime operations in the region, saying:
“The Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf would not be managed by Trump’s delusional posts! No one would believe blame game scenarios!”

The remarks came shortly after Trump announced that US forces would begin escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday. He described the initiative as “Project Freedom”, claiming it was a “humanitarian” effort aimed at assisting vessels facing supply shortages due to the ongoing blockade conditions.

Trump also warned that any obstruction to the US-led operation would “have to be dealt with forcefully.”

Iran, however, has maintained that it has introduced a regulatory maritime system rather than closing the strait, requiring vessels to obtain authorization before passing through. Iranian officials say the measures are a sovereign response to ongoing security threats in the region.

Tehran has also accused the United States of enforcing an illegal naval blockade on Iranian ports, calling it a violation of international law and part of broader aggression linked to the conflict that escalated earlier this year.

Iranian authorities argue that responsibility for any disruption in maritime traffic lies with US actions and its allies, while insisting that regional waters must be managed without foreign intervention.

Meanwhile, diplomatic tensions remain high despite Trump’s claim of “very positive discussions” with Tehran. Iranian officials say negotiations have stalled since the ceasefire began, with only limited progress in peace talks mediated earlier this year.

Iranian military leaders have also issued strong warnings. The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps stated that the United States faces a choice between escalation and diplomacy, while senior military adviser Major General Mohsen Rezaei warned of strong retaliation against any naval pressure in the region.

Iran continues to emphasize that regional security should be maintained exclusively by regional states without external military involvement.
