Trump–Netanyahu Call Turns Tense Over Pakistan-Qatar Draft Iran Peace Proposal Amid High-Stakes Nuclear Talks
A revised Iran peace proposal developed with contributions from Pakistan and Qatar has reportedly triggered a tense conversation between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to Axios. The discussions come as Washington and Tehran evaluate a potential agreement to end ongoing regional conflict.
The report said Pakistan and Qatar, alongside other regional mediators including Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Egypt, worked on updating a peace memorandum aimed at narrowing gaps between the United States and Iran. The initiative comes as Trump weighs between a potential military strike and continued negotiations.
Netanyahu remains strongly opposed to the diplomatic track and prefers renewed military pressure on Iran to weaken its strategic and military infrastructure. In contrast, Trump has continued to signal openness to a deal while warning that escalation remains possible if talks fail.
“The only question is do we go and finish it up or are they gonna be signing a document. Let’s see what happens,” Trump said on Wednesday at the Coast Guard Academy.
He later added that the US and Iran were “right on the borderline” between reaching an agreement or returning to conflict, also suggesting he has significant influence over Netanyahu’s stance.
Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt have been actively refining the proposal. A Qatari diplomat said Doha continues to support Pakistani-led mediation efforts and emphasized de-escalation for regional stability.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry stated that negotiations continue “based on Iran’s 14-point proposal”, while noting that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has visited Tehran to support mediation efforts.
The updated draft reportedly focuses on Iranian nuclear commitments and US assurances regarding the gradual release of frozen Iranian assets. However, uncertainty remains over whether Tehran will accept the latest terms.
Meanwhile, reports indicate Trump and Netanyahu held a “difficult” call, during which disagreements over strategy became evident. One US source said mediators are working on a “letter of intent” that could lead to a 30-day negotiation framework.
Israeli and US sources described strong disagreement between the two leaders, with tensions reportedly escalating during the call.
Iranian officials said talks would only progress if US actions against Iranian shipping end and frozen funds are released, while also linking progress to regional ceasefire conditions.
Trump warned that military action could resume “very quickly” if negotiations fail, though he expressed willingness to continue talks briefly to avoid further escalation.
