Houthis declare full ban on Israeli shipping traffic in Red Sea

08 June, 2026 15:00

Yemen’s Houthi movement has announced a “complete and total ban” on Israeli maritime navigation in the Red Sea. The group said that any ship linked to Israel will now be treated as a legitimate military target.

According to Arab News, the move marks a serious escalation in tensions in the region and could further disrupt one of the world’s most important sea trade routes.

The group’s military wing said the ban applies to all vessels flying the Israeli flag, operated by Israeli companies, or owned by Israeli citizens. The Houthis also warned international shipping companies to avoid cooperation with Israel and stay away from the designated area to ensure the safety of their ships and crews.

Key Global Trade Route at Risk

The Red Sea and the nearby Bab al-Mandab Strait are very important for global trade, handling around 12% of world maritime shipping, including oil and gas shipments.

Experts say that if the ban continues, shipping companies may be forced to avoid the Suez Canal and take a much longer route around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope. This would increase travel time and raise shipping costs worldwide.

Maritime security agencies have already advised ships in the region to remain alert and follow strict safety measures while passing through the area.

Rising Tensions in the Region

The announcement has drawn strong reactions from several international powers, which have called it a threat to freedom of navigation.

At the same time, diplomatic efforts are reportedly underway to reduce tensions, although Houthi leaders continue to link the decision to ongoing regional conflicts.

With insurance costs for ships in the Red Sea rising, experts warn that any further escalation could lead to a wider crisis, affecting global trade and regional stability.
