Three Indian Sailors Killed in US Strike on MT Settebello Off Oman
India’s shipping minister confirmed on Thursday that three Indian nationals serving aboard a commercial tanker have died after the vessel was struck by the United States military off the coast of Oman.
Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal issued a formal statement expressing grief over the incident involving the Palau-registered MT Settebello, which was attacked a day prior.
“It is deeply unfortunate to learn of the tragic incident aboard the Palau-flagged MT Settebello.”
He confirmed that the three Indian seafarers who had initially been reported as missing had since been found deceased.
“Sadly, three Indian seafarers initially reported missing are now confirmed dead after bodies have been located and identified.”
In response, India’s foreign ministry called in a senior American diplomatic official in New Delhi to deliver what it described as “a strong protest” over the US military strike on MT Settebello.
This was the second instance within the same week of the US striking a cargo vessel carrying a predominantly Indian crew. Earlier, on June 8, Omani rescue teams airlifted 24 Indian sailors from the MT Marivex — another Palau-flagged tanker — following a US attack. Footage shared by the Forward Seamen’s Union of India depicted crew members being hoisted to safety by helicopter while heavy black smoke engulfed the ship’s bridge and accommodation areas.
Minister Sonowal reaffirmed the government’s support for the affected families, saying the government stood “firmly with the bereaved during this difficult hour.”
“I have directed officials to ensure immediate repatriation of the rescued crew members and swift return of the mortal remains of the deceased for their final rites.”
