US envoy, Iranian minister head to Switzerland for talks

20 June, 2026 09:50

US envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi were both reportedly travelling to Switzerland for talks, according to Axios, as diplomatic efforts gain momentum following a ceasefire in Lebanon.

The renewed push for negotiations comes as Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire after days of intensified fighting that had raised concerns about regional stability and delayed US-Iran diplomatic efforts.

The discussions are linked to a 14-point memorandum recently signed by both sides, which aims to pause hostilities and create a 60-day window for further negotiations. These talks are expected to focus on Iran’s nuclear programme and other key issues needed to build a longer-term agreement.

The deal is also seen as important for improving security in the region and ensuring the smooth flow of oil supplies through strategic routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the report, the ceasefire in Lebanon has helped revive hopes that the interim agreement between the US and Iran could be turned into a more permanent regional settlement.

Officials are now working to use the calm in Lebanon as an opportunity to move forward with diplomatic talks and reduce tensions in the region.
