UK PM Starmer ‘Ready to Quit’ Reported But Government Source Denies Exit Claims
According to Britain’s Observer, that Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to step down on Monday and may outline a schedule for his resignation. A government source said that despite reports, he is still concentrating on his work and governing the country.
Starmer’s position has come under increasing pressure for months, and rose sharply after Andy Burnham won a parliamentary seat on Friday, giving him a possible path to challenge for leadership.
As per the Observer, Starmer had been considering his future with his wife at Chequers, his country home, before reaching a final decision. It is reported that senior Labour figures believe a definitive statement on his future as soon as Monday.
Even amid the speculation, a government source tense that Starmer is still attentive on running the government and has earlier dismissed resignation claims. He has stated, he will compete with any leadership encounter and advised the party to avoid internal struggle.
In 2024, after leading Labour to a major victory, his status has tumbled after controversies and policy choices. Many voters, critics say, he has fallen short of his promises to improve living standards.
If he leaves office, it would make him Britain’s seventh prime minister in just over ten years, directing to constant political uncertainty and public unhappiness over issues including public services and immigration.
It is reported that over 100 Labour MPs have already called on him to resign or announce a departure timetable.
Andy Burnham is regarded as a top contender for the position. Having recently won a parliamentary seat, he has emerged as a strong alternative within the party, but has not yet formally begun a leadership challenge.
