Starmer Announces Resignation After Mounting Pressure

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that he will step down as both prime minister and leader of the Labour Party, less than two years after leading Labour to a landslide election victory. In a statement on Monday, Starmer said he had accepted that many within his party no longer believed he was the right person to lead them into the next general election and would oversee an orderly transition to a new leader.
The resignation follows months of political turmoil and growing unrest within the governing Labour Party. Starmer faced intense criticism after poor local election results, falling public approval ratings, and a series of policy controversies that weakened his authority. Senior Labour figures and dozens of MPs had publicly questioned his leadership, while concerns grew over the party’s ability to compete against the rising influence of Reform UK and other opposition forces.
Attention is now focused on the race to replace him, with Andy Burnham widely seen as the frontrunner. Labour is expected to begin the formal leadership process in July, with a successor likely to be chosen before Parliament returns after the summer recess. Starmer has pledged to remain in office until the transition is complete and said he will support whoever is selected to lead the party next.
