Europe hit by severe heatwave, 18 dead in France
Europe is facing a severe heatwave, with extreme temperatures affecting many countries. In France, at least 18 people have died due to the intense heat, and several others have fallen seriously ill.
According to reports, the heatwave has spread across most parts of Europe. In France, five people died directly due to high temperatures, including two young children. In addition, 13 people drowned at different locations while trying to cool off in water.
The central French city of Poitiers broke a 78-year-old temperature record, with the mercury reaching 41.2°C. In Bordeaux, western France, temperatures rose to 41.9°C, breaking last year’s August record.
Due to the extreme conditions, French authorities have introduced emergency measures in several regions. Many schools have been temporarily closed to protect students.
The national weather agency has warned that the heatwave is likely to continue for the next few days across different parts of Europe.
