Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Surpasses 900 as Rescue Efforts Continue

27 June, 2026 14:28

More than 900 people have been killed and 3,360 others injured following two powerful earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on Wednesday, according to the latest official figures. Rescue teams continue searching collapsed buildings for survivors as families anxiously await news of missing loved ones.

The twin earthquakes caused widespread destruction across the country’s north, including in the capital, Caracas, where dozens of residential and commercial buildings collapsed. Hospitals and emergency responders have established makeshift medical facilities to treat the injured as authorities work to restore essential services. Hundreds of international search-and-rescue personnel have arrived to support relief operations, with additional teams expected in the coming days.

The earthquakes, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, struck less than a minute apart, making them among the strongest tremors to hit Venezuela in more than a century. Officials have warned that the death toll may continue to rise as rescuers reach devastated areas and aftershocks complicate search operations.
