Modi’s Australia Visit Sparks Strong Human Rights Protests
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Australia has sparked criticism and planned protests by human rights groups. Calls are growing for the Australian government to raise concerns about human rights issues in India during the visit.
According to The Guardian, an Australian civil society organization has announced protests against what it describes as hatred, discrimination, and mistreatment of Muslims in India.
Indian analyst Jethrath Rao criticized the Modi government, saying that poor governments often fail to handle minority issues wisely.
Amnesty International has urged the Australian government to raise human rights concerns with India. The organization also called for greater freedom for journalists and human rights activists to work without fear or pressure.
Amnesty further demanded an end to discrimination against religious and ethnic minorities in India.
The report also said that under a controversial citizenship law introduced during Modi’s rule, refugees from Muslim-majority countries were excluded. It added that Modi’s party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been accused of promoting the Hindu nationalist ideology of Hindutva and undermining human rights.
Indian human rights lawyer Colin Gonsalves said that many incidents of violence and abuse have been reported in recent years in states such as Chhattisgarh, Manipur, and Ladakh. He also claimed that accountability for such incidents remains weak.
The planned protests are expected to increase pressure on both the Indian and Australian governments during Modi’s visit.
