Studies Highlight Growing Concerns Over Social Media’s Impact on Teen Mental Health

11 July, 2026 20:23

Researches are increasingly pointing to a possible connection between social media use and rising levels of depression and anxiety among children and teenagers. A review of more than 100 studies involving young people found that frequent use of social media platforms was linked to higher rates of depressive symptoms and anxiety. Other research suggests that teenagers, particularly younger adolescents, may face a greater risk of depression as their daily time spent on social media increases.

However, researchers emphasize that these findings demonstrate an association rather than proving that social media platforms directly cause depression. The relationship is complex, with factors such as personal circumstances, online experiences, family support, and existing mental health conditions all playing a role in how social media affects individuals.

The concerns have grown as the expansion of social media has occurred alongside increased smartphone use among young people. Researchers have noted that the rise of digital platforms coincided with a period in which mental health challenges among teenagers became more widely reported, prompting further investigation into the potential effects of constant online engagement.

A 2017 to 2019 studies examined more than 500,000 students from grades eight through 12 found a significant increase in the number of teenagers experiencing high levels of depressive symptoms between 2010 and 2015. During the same period, suicide rates among girls in that age group also increased substantially, raising further questions about factors influencing youth mental health.

As governments consider stricter rules for protecting children online and technology companies introduce new safety measures, the debate over social media’s role in teenage well-being continues. Experts say digital platforms can offer benefits such as connection and support, but more research is needed to better understand and address potential risks.
