Iranian Threat Scared Trump? US President Secretly Moved in a Catering Container

President Trump left last month’s NATO summit in Ankara aboard what the public was told was Air Force One. He wasn’t on it.

The Washington Post reported Monday that Trump exited the aircraft through a catering truck on the tarmac, transferred to a smaller C-32A military jet, and flew separately to the UK while the older 747 he’d arrived on took off as a decoy — carrying reporters and some White House staff who believed the president was aboard. The operation followed a specific Iranian threat, identified by intelligence officials, involving a shoulder-fired missile aimed at Trump’s aircraft.

The mechanics were deliberately disorienting. Journalists on the decoy plane were told to keep window shades closed for takeoff. Flight-tracking data reviewed by the Post showed the old jet initially broadcasting no callsign, then switching to “AF1” mid-flight — despite Trump not being aboard. He later disembarked publicly from that same aircraft at RAF Mildenhall in England, reinforcing the impression he’d flown the whole route on it.

The threat itself has a documented, if inconsistently described, origin. Israeli intelligence flagged the missile plot to US counterparts, a channel US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee later confirmed publicly. But American officials characterized the underlying intelligence differently — as internal Iranian discussion about the possibility of targeting Trump, not a fully operational plot. That gap between an ally’s urgent warning and Washington’s more measured read on the same intelligence isn’t unusual in threat assessments, but it does mean the extraordinary security response outran what US officials themselves were willing to call confirmed.

It also wasn’t the first time Trump’s team leaned on a decoy under Iranian threat. Reporting on the 2024 campaign described a similar tactic — a borrowed private jet standing in for Trump’s own plane after intelligence indicated Iranian operatives with surface-to-air missile access had entered the country. The Ankara operation suggests that playbook has since been formalized into standing presidential security protocol rather than a one-off campaign-trail improvisation.

The White House has not disputed the Post’s account in detail. It said protecting the president is the top priority and that officials use “every tool” against threats it says Iran continues to pose. The Secret Service declined to discuss the specific operation.

None of Iran’s alleged plotting has been independently verified beyond the intelligence-sharing chain described by US and Israeli officials. What’s harder to dispute is the operational shift it produced: a sitting US president now travels internationally, at least some of the time, with the public account of his whereabouts deliberately false until he’s safely landed.
