Erdogan Raises Kashmir Issue at UNGA, Calls for Dialogue Under UN Charter

NEW YORK: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has once again raised the Kashmir issue at the United Nations General Assembly, calling for disputes in South Asia, including Kashmir, to be addressed through dialogue and within the framework of the UN Charter and relevant resolutions.

Addressing the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Erdogan said resolving the Kashmir issue was important for peace and stability in South Asia. His remarks were made during the high-level general debate in New York.

Erdogan Calls for Dialogue on Kashmir

The Turkish president said all disputes in South Asia, including the Kashmir issue, should be addressed through dialogue in accordance with the UN Charter and relevant resolutions.

Erdogan has repeatedly raised the Kashmir issue at international forums and has previously called for a peaceful resolution based on dialogue and the aspirations of the people of Kashmir.

His latest remarks came in the presence of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the UN headquarters in New York.

Turkish President Highlights Regional Peace

Erdogan linked the resolution of outstanding disputes with the broader objective of maintaining peace and stability in South Asia.

He also used his address to discuss the situation in Gaza, the Palestinian statehood issue and the need for reforms to the United Nations Security Council.

The Turkish president criticised the current structure of the Security Council and called for reforms, arguing that the existing system has limited the UN’s ability to respond effectively to major international crises.

Kashmir Remains a Recurring Issue in Erdogan’s UN Speeches

Erdogan has raised Kashmir at several previous UN General Assembly sessions. His comments have consistently drawn objections from India, which maintains that Jammu and Kashmir is an internal matter and rejects third-party involvement.

The latest remarks therefore again brought the Kashmir dispute into the international spotlight during the UN General Assembly’s high-level debate.

The 81st UN General Assembly general debate is being held from September 22 to 28, with world leaders addressing major international, regional and security issues.
