US Forces Have Redirected 59 Ships in Iran Blockade

US Central Command says its forces have now redirected 59 commercial vessels, disabled three and boarded two others enforcing the naval blockade on Iran — a pace of interdiction that has more than tripled since late July.

CENTCOM posted the update on X alongside an image of an F/A-18 launching from the USS George H.W. Bush, describing the carrier as supporting enforcement of what the command calls America’s “steel wall blockade against Iran.” The tally, current as of August 12, covers all interdictions since the blockade began enforcing restrictions on Iran-bound and Iran-origin shipping.

The trajectory is the real story in the numbers. CENTCOM reported 18 vessels redirected as of July 28, with more than 20 US Navy warships operating across the Middle East supporting the effort. That climbed to 44 by August 3, then 55 by August 11, and now 59 a day later — a run rate that suggests interdictions are accelerating rather than tapering off nearly four months into the operation, which began April 13 after the Islamabad talks failed to produce a lasting resolution.

The word “redirected” is doing more work than it might appear to. CENTCOM has been explicit that the Strait of Hormuz itself remains open for neutral transit to and from non-Iranian ports, with US forces actively assisting commercial traffic through the waterway while restricting only Iran-linked shipping. Enforcement tactics range from warnings and redirection to disabling a vessel’s propulsion or steering — including, in some cases, Hellfire missile strikes on ships that don’t comply — and boarding operations by US personnel.

Iran isn’t accepting that framing. The IRGC-linked Persian Gulf Strait Authority responded directly under CENTCOM’s own post, saying repeated American claims about reopening the strait don’t change reality on the water and that it remains blocked until Tehran’s conditions are met. That’s consistent with Iran’s position throughout the blockade: Washington describes an open strait with restrictions on Iranian shipping, while Tehran describes a closed strait, full stop — two accounts of the same waterway that can’t both be true as stated.

What isn’t in dispute is the economic pressure building on Iran’s oil exports, a core revenue stream now squeezed by nearly four months of sustained interdiction layered on top of existing sanctions. Whether that pressure moves Tehran back toward the stalled Islamabad framework, or simply hardens the standoff further, is likely to be shaped more by these accumulating vessel counts than by either government’s public statements about who controls the strait.
