Taliban Restrictions Push Afghan Women Toward Despair, The Guardian Reports

The Taliban regime’s restrictions on women in Afghanistan have intensified concerns over gender discrimination, with Afghan women increasingly facing severe social and legal constraints. According to an investigative report by The Guardian, discriminatory policies have become embedded in the Taliban’s system of governance, creating conditions in which women are deprived of basic rights and freedoms.

The report said the Taliban have established a system that effectively marginalizes half of Afghanistan’s population, while using and changing regulations at their discretion to maintain control over women. The sweeping restrictions have severely limited women’s access to education, employment, public life and other areas of society.

According to The Guardian, Afghanistan has an unusual pattern in which around 80 percent of reported suicide cases and attempts involve women, highlighting the severe psychological and social pressures faced by Afghan women. The report has drawn renewed attention to the consequences of the Taliban’s policies and the worsening conditions for women under its rule.
