Pentagon Probes Iran War Information Leak, Around 50 US Personnel Undergo Polygraph Tests

WASHINGTON: The Pentagon has conducted polygraph tests on around 50 military officers and civilian personnel as part of an investigation into the alleged leak of sensitive information about US weapons and military stockpiles during the war with Iran.

According to US media reports, personnel associated with the Pentagon’s Joint Staff were questioned during August and underwent polygraph examinations as investigators attempted to determine how classified information reached the media.

The investigation is reportedly centred on the disclosure of sensitive information concerning shortages in key US military stockpiles, including long-range missiles and Patriot air-defence interceptors.

US officials are seeking to determine how information about the availability of American weapons, ammunition and defensive capabilities was obtained and subsequently provided to media organisations.

The disclosure has raised concerns within the Pentagon because details about military stockpiles can provide insight into the US Armed Forces’ operational capacity and its ability to sustain prolonged combat operations.

Despite questioning and polygraph tests involving approximately 50 personnel, investigators have reportedly not yet reached a clear conclusion identifying the individual or individuals responsible for the alleged leak.

The US Department of Defence has declined to comment on specific personnel or details of the ongoing investigation.

Officials have nevertheless described the unauthorised disclosure of sensitive and classified information as a serious national security matter.

US President Donald Trump has also expressed strong anger over the leaking of sensitive information.

Pentagon investigators are continuing efforts to identify the source of the alleged disclosure and determine whether classified material was intentionally passed to journalists or became accessible through other means.

Investigators are examining which personnel had access to sensitive defence information and how details regarding US weapons stockpiles were transmitted to the media during the conflict.

The investigation is considered particularly sensitive because information about missile inventories, defence systems and ammunition shortages could reveal weaknesses in the US military’s ability to conduct sustained operations.
