Russian FM Says Makkah Defence Alliance Could Expand to Include Iran, Egypt and Algeria

MOSCOW: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has described the Makkah Defence Alliance as an important development for regional security, saying Iran could eventually become part of the emerging security grouping.

Speaking at a ceremony in Moscow, Lavrov said the alliance could develop into an effective mechanism for strengthening regional cooperation and security.

He also welcomed the possibility of Egypt and Algeria joining the grouping, saying their participation would further strengthen regional security efforts.

Lavrov said Iran could eventually become a member of the Makkah Defence Alliance, potentially bringing another major regional power into the emerging security framework.

He described the alliance as a significant step toward developing stronger regional security arrangements and greater cooperation among countries of the region.

“If Egypt and Algeria join, it will be a positive development too,” Lavrov said.

The Russian foreign minister said the alliance could serve as a practical mechanism for implementing Moscow’s broader concept of regional security.

He described the formation of the alliance as a “very good practical step” toward putting Russia’s proposed regional security framework into practice.

Lavrov’s remarks reflect Moscow’s support for regional countries taking a greater role in shaping their own security arrangements.

The potential inclusion of Iran, Egypt and Algeria could significantly broaden the geographical and political reach of the Makkah Defence Alliance.
