Iran, Iraq and Gulf States to Hold Talks on Strait of Hormuz

TEHRAN: A new diplomatic initiative could emerge in the Middle East as Iran, Iraq and Gulf countries have agreed to hold talks on the security situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, a meeting between Iran and Gulf states will be held in Oman on Monday, with the discussions focused on strengthening regional security and addressing concerns surrounding the strategically important waterway.

The meeting comes amid heightened tensions in and around the Strait of Hormuz, where disruptions to maritime traffic have raised concerns over energy supplies, shipping and fuel prices.

Iran said the Oman meeting would focus on establishing greater coordination among regional countries on security matters.

Tehran has maintained that countries in the region should play a central role in determining security arrangements rather than relying on external powers.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry also blamed the United States for what it described as instability in the Strait of Hormuz and rising fuel prices.

According to Tehran, Iran was forced to take measures to protect its national security amid the deteriorating regional situation.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry said Tehran recognised the importance of finding a diplomatic solution to the ongoing tensions.

However, it stressed that negotiations could only take place if the other side was also prepared to engage in dialogue.

The statement suggested that Iran remained open to diplomatic efforts but would not pursue negotiations without reciprocal willingness from the opposing side.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital route for international energy shipments, making its security a major concern for countries across the Gulf and beyond.

Any prolonged disruption to maritime traffic through the waterway could affect global oil supplies, shipping costs and energy prices.

The proposed meeting in Oman could therefore provide an important platform for regional countries to discuss maritime security, reduce tensions and explore mechanisms for keeping commercial shipping routes open.

The talks also come as regional states seek greater coordination amid continuing tensions involving Iran, the United States and other regional actors.

A successful diplomatic initiative could help reduce risks around the Strait of Hormuz, although Iran has made clear that progress will depend on the willingness of all sides to engage in meaningful negotiations.
