Manipur Violence Continues as Modi Government Faces Criticism Over Security Situation

Violence continues in India’s northeastern state of Manipur, with fresh incidents of killing reported amid the prolonged ethnic conflict that has left hundreds dead and tens of thousands displaced.

According to The Wire, unidentified persons shot dead a 17-year-old Naga boy in Tamenglong district on September 21. Police said the teenager was attacked while travelling alone from Upper Nkou village towards Tamei town.

The latest incident has added to concerns over continuing violence in the state, where clashes between communities have persisted despite security measures and political efforts to restore normalcy.

A separate report by The Wire, citing information obtained under India’s Right to Information law, said at least 731 people living in relief camps and prefabricated settlements had died since the violence began in May 2023. More than 43,000 people remained displaced as of April 30, according to the disclosed data.

The figures cover deaths among displaced people in relief camps and temporary settlements and are separate from the broader number of people killed during the ethnic conflict.

The violence began in May 2023 following a tribal solidarity march and led to prolonged clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. The state remains deeply divided, with many displaced families unable to return to their homes because of continuing security concerns.

Criticism has continued over the authorities’ handling of the crisis, while questions have also been raised over the response of the central government to the continuing violence.

The latest killings underline the continuing security challenges in Manipur, where ethnic tensions and armed incidents remain a major concern despite efforts to restore stability.
