Pro-Palestinian Protesters Gather Outside UN Ahead of Netanyahu Speech

Around 200 protesters gathered outside the United Nations headquarters in New York ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the 81st UN General Assembly, protesting Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and calling for Palestinian rights.

The demonstration was organised by Jewish Voice for Peace, according to Reuters, with protesters wearing shirts carrying messages including “Free Palestine” and “No war.”

The protesters blocked traffic outside the UN complex, prompting police to order them to move from the road.

Some demonstrators moved to the pavements, while others remained seated in the street and continued chanting slogans against Netanyahu.

Police Arrest More Than 30 Protesters

Police arrested at least 30 people, including actors, politicians and other demonstrators, during the protest.

Among those detained were Oscar-winning actor Susan Sarandon, Emmy winner Hannah Einbinder, Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier and New York City Council member Chi Osse.

Police officers surrounded the protesters and escorted those arrested to police vehicles.

The demonstration took place as Netanyahu prepared to address the General Assembly and defend Israel’s actions in the region.

The protests reflected continuing disagreement in New York and internationally over Israel’s military operations in Gaza and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
