Xi Jinping Urges US and Iran to Return to Islamabad Memorandum

WASHINGTON: Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged the United States and Iran to return to negotiations and resume the framework established under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding to help end their conflict.

Xi made the remarks during a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House, according to China’s state-run Xinhua news agency.

The Chinese president said Beijing had consistently supported respect for the sovereignty and security of all countries and encouraged the relevant parties to resolve their differences through dialogue and negotiation.

China Calls for Comprehensive Agreement

Xi expressed hope that Washington and Tehran would return to the negotiating process and eventually reach a comprehensive agreement covering the nuclear issue and other outstanding matters.

He said China would continue to support efforts aimed at easing tensions and promoting a peaceful resolution.

The Islamabad Memorandum was signed in June as an interim US-Iran agreement, with Pakistan playing a mediating and witnessing role. The agreement established a framework for ending military operations and moving toward broader negotiations.

Pakistan’s Diplomatic Role

Pakistan has continued to support implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum as part of efforts to end the US-Iran conflict.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also discussed implementation of the memorandum with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during their meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Xi’s remarks add China’s diplomatic weight to calls for Washington and Tehran to return to the framework and pursue negotiations rather than further escalation.
