Singer Omar Malik gets relief in Jinnah House vandalism case

21 October, 2024 19:54

LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court in Lahore has acquitted singer Omar Malik of all charges related to the Jinnah House attack case.

The acquittal comes on the heels of violent protests that erupted across Pakistan on May 9, following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan.

Khan’s arrest sparked widespread agitation among party workers, leading to clashes in major and remote cities.

The situation spiralled out of control, prompting authorities to summon armed forces to maintain law and order in Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad.

During the hearing, the ATC judge questioned the investigation officer about the 16-month delay in Malik’s arrest, asking pointedly, “Why did you remain silent for 16 months?” The judge also sought clarification on why Malik hadn’t been declared a fugitive during that time.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the court delivered its verdict, clearing Malik of all charges.

Violent clashes broke out across Pakistan after the former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan were arrested at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) .
