India shatter 47-year-old record with 295-run victory in Perth Test
PERTH: India defeated Australia by a commanding 295 runs in the opening Test of their five-match series at Optus Stadium on Monday, setting a new record for their biggest victory in terms of runs in Australia.
After being dismissed for just 150 in their first innings, India made a stunning recovery by dismissing Australia for 104, securing a 46-run lead. The visitors then piled on 487/6 in their second innings, led by brilliant centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli, setting Australia a daunting target of 534 runs.
In response, Australia was bowled out for 238 in the final session of the penultimate day, handing India a dominant 295-run victory. This win surpasses India’s previous record of a 222-run victory in Melbourne in 1977.
This result also marks Australia’s second-largest defeat at home in the past 40 years, with their biggest loss being a 309-run defeat to South Africa at the WACA in 2012. Additionally, it is Australia’s second-largest defeat to India in terms of runs, following their 320-run loss to India in the 2008 Mohali Test.
India’s victory in Perth also stands as their biggest Test win in Australia by a margin of runs, highlighting a remarkable performance in the series opener.
