Issue of 900pc hike in Pakistani ministers’ salaries echoes in State Department
The spokesperson for US State Department’s has given his reaction on the enormous increase in the salaries of provincial ministers and advisers in Pakistan.
In the routine press briefing of the State Department, a journalist asked that the salaries of ministers in Pakistan have increased by 900 per cent.
Continuing the question, the journalist further said that just a month ago he asked the Pakistani finance minister in Washington DC that this increase is completely unacceptable in a country where there is so much poverty and then you come here to ask for funds or loans.
To which, Matthew Miller, the spokesperson, vaguely said that he knows that this question is somewhere. I hope we get to that soon.
The journalist laughed and said: “I hope so, but what do you think about this?”
The spokesperson asked who? On the issue of salary increase?
Explaining his question, the journalist said that America helped Pakistan in this difficult time, but the rulers there increased their salaries by 900 per cent.
Matthew Miller replied that in his opinion the question of salary increase is a matter for the people of Pakistan and the government there, and not an American problem.
He added that therefore the question should also be with the Pakistani government and not from America.
The spokesperson emphasized that we do not give our opinion on the salaries of government employees of any country around the world and our policy will be the same for Pakistan.
