Ramadan 2025 Moon Sighting: Saudi Arabia & Global Crescent Visibility Updates
Ramadan, also referred to as Ramazan or Ramzan, is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and holds immense religious significance for Muslims worldwide. The term “Ramadan” originates from the Arabic root “ramida” or “ar-ramad,” meaning “scorching heat.”
This sacred month is observed through fasting from dawn to sunset, prayers for guidance and peace, and acts of charity (zakat). As one of the five pillars of Islam—alongside Shahada (faith), Salat (prayer), Zakat (charity), and Hajj (pilgrimage)—Ramadan is a period of deep spiritual reflection and devotion.
Since the Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle, the beginning of each month depends on the sighting of the crescent moon. Therefore, the start of Ramadan shifts each year in the Gregorian calendar. In 2025, Ramadan is anticipated to begin on March 1, contingent upon the moon sighting on the evening of February 28.
