Kurdish group PKK announces ceasefire with Turkiye
Turkey’s Kurdish group Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has announced a ceasefire with Turkey, following an appeal from its captive leader Abdullah Öcalan.
According to a statement issued in Kurdish media supporting the banned organization, they are following the call of their leader Abdullah Öcalan to establish a peaceful and democratic society and are following an immediate ceasefire with the Turkish state.
“We fully agree with and will abide by the ceasefire call, there will be no armed action from our side until we are attacked,” the statement said.
With the announcement of the Kurdish organization, the end of the 40-year conflict in Turkey has begun, which can have far-reaching consequences for political and peace in the region.
Abdullah Özlan, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party imprisoned in Turkey, appealed to his organization to surrender two days ago.
A delegation of the pro-Kurdish Turkish People’s Equality and Democracy Party (DEM) met Öcalan in his prison and later issued a statement in Istanbul.
Abdullah Öcalan has been imprisoned in Turkiye’s Amrali prison since 1999.
