Fake BISP Messages: Government Warns Against SMS & WhatsApp Scams

In recent days, numerous individuals across Pakistan have reported receiving fraudulent messages falsely claiming to be from the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).

These deceptive SMS and WhatsApp messages mislead recipients by informing them that they have been granted a large sum of money and instruct them to contact a specific number for further details.

How These Scams Operate

Scammers typically send messages that:

• Claim the recipient has received a significant amount, such as Rs. 75,600.
• Direct the recipient to contact a WhatsApp number for verification.
• Attempt to steal personal information or demand a processing fee.

How to Spot a Fake BISP Message

To avoid falling victim to these scams, watch for these warning signs:

• Unknown Numbers: Fake BISP messages often originate from random or unofficial phone numbers.
• Poor Language & Formatting: These fraudulent messages may contain spelling mistakes and incorrect grammar.
• Requests for Sensitive Information: Scammers may ask for CNIC details, bank information, or upfront payments.
• WhatsApp Contact for Confirmation: The official BISP system does not operate via WhatsApp.

What to Do If You Receive a Fake Message?

• Do not reply to the message or call the provided number.
• Do not share personal details like CNIC, bank account, or address.
• Report such scams to the official BISP helpline at 0800-26477.
• Always verify payments through official BISP channels, such as the website (www.bisp.gov.pk) or registered BISP offices.

Official BISP Communication Channels

BISP only communicates with beneficiaries through the 8171 SMS service, which is the only verified number for updates. Any other number claiming to be BISP is fraudulent. Citizens are urged to stay cautious and avoid sharing their personal information.
