Why WhatsApp banned 10 million accounts in India?

24 March, 2025 15:14

In a major crackdown against spam and fraud, WhatsApp has announced that it banned over 9.9 million accounts in India during January 2025. The move is part of Meta-owned WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to keep the platform safe and secure for users.

Out of the banned accounts, around 1.3 million were removed proactively—before any user complaints were filed. These accounts were flagged by WhatsApp’s automated systems for suspicious behavior, such as bulk messaging, spreading fake news, or using unauthorized contact lists.

During the same period, WhatsApp also received 9,474 user complaints from India. These complaints involved issues like spam, harassment, and account misuse.

After reviewing them, WhatsApp took action on 239 accounts, which included both bans and reinstatements for wrongly reported cases.

WhatsApp clarified that these actions are in line with India’s IT Rules 2021, which require digital platforms to take strong action against harmful content and misuse.

To detect suspicious activity, WhatsApp monitors accounts at different stages: during registration, messaging behavior, and when users receive multiple blocks or negative reports. A dedicated team also reviews more complex cases to ensure proper action is taken.

The company has warned users that any form of misinformation, harassment, or illegal activity will lead to suspension. WhatsApp also publishes monthly compliance reports in India to maintain transparency.

These efforts reflect WhatsApp’s commitment to user safety and responsible digital communication in one of its largest markets.
