Early School Summer Holidays 2025 Declared Amid Heatwave Alert

08 April, 2025 13:25

As severe heat waves ravage much of India, two major states are taking steps to protect student safety from burning heat by initiating early summer vacations for the 2025 school year. For its part, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal announced an early summer school closure due to increased heat and darkness headed their way.
Madhya Pradesh announced a 46-day summer closure for government school students, from May 1 to June 15, 2025. The decision was made by the School Education Department in order to mitigate heat levels which can exceed 40C in the hottest months of the year. Teachers are expected to take a shorter vacation from May 1May 31 before returning to prepare for the year, and resume professional development training.
Officials stressed that safeguarding children was a necessary reason to close in order to meet the safety of its students. The School department is thinking about offering online revision modules to help with gaps so students are not missing educational time. The school term will return on June 16, 2025, so students will transition back to school to begin the new academic year.
At the same time, West Bengal is shifting its school schedules as a result of the anticipated heatwave impending in May. Promising Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee indicated in a notification that the states government has decided to move forward the summer vacation for primary, intermediate and higher secondary schools to April 30, 2025.
This is a first for primary, intermediate, and higher secondary schools, as summer holidays have never been scheduled so early in the year. This change is preventative to the rising temperatures in different parts of the states. The summer break will be for two weeks and the Education Department is likely to provide recommendations for schools to realign their schedules.
The decisions made in both states show an increasing consciousness of the environmental repercussions of extreme weather events. Generally, parents and students are supportive of the decision and many have thanked the decision makers for the focus on children’s health and safety in the current climate challenges. This also permits school children to rest from the dangers of the sweltering heat, while still placing an emphasis on schooling in a shame way.
