Early summer break proposed in Punjab over rising temperatures

19 April, 2025 00:45

In a welcome move for students, parents, and teachers, the Punjab School Education Department (PSED)has proposed starting summer vacations early from June 1, 2025, in light of the intense heatwave sweeping across the province.

The summary has been sent to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for final approval. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned of severe weather conditions beginning April 13, with temperatures expected to soar 4–7°C above normal, especially in Central and South Punjab.

Secretary Education Khalid Nazir Wattoo confirmed that the proposal is under review and a final decision will be announced soon. “The health and well-being of our students is our top priority,” he said.

To protect students in the meantime, schools have been directed to:

  • Minimize outdoor activities

  • Ensure classrooms are well-ventilated

  • Provide access to cold and clean drinking water

  • Encourage students to stay hydrated throughout the day

The move has brought relief and excitement among schoolchildren, who are looking forward to an early break from classes. Parents and teachers have praised the initiative, calling it a timely step to safeguard children’s health.

In response to the heatwave, the Punjab government has also issued a general alert. Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has advised citizens to:

  • Avoid going outdoors between 11 AM and 4 PM

  • Keep children and elderly indoors

  • Stay hydrated and wear light clothing

Additionally, hospitals across the province have been instructed to set up special heatstroke desks to manage possible emergencies.

The final announcement on summer vacations is expected soon, but for now, there’s growing hope that the school break will come earlier than expected — giving students a much-needed escape from the scorching heat.
