How to travel like first-class while flying economy - without spending
For most travelers, enjoying the luxury of first-class on a long-haul flight remains a distant dream. However, a clever and increasingly popular travel hack is changing that—offering passengers a taste of first-class comfort while flying economy, and at a fraction of the cost.
Documented by travel influencers like Maddie Borge (@maddieborge) and Laureen Uy (@laureenmuy), this hack revolves around a growing trend among airlines: the “neighbour-free” seating option.
Airlines such as Etihad Airways, Qantas, Lufthansa, SriLankan Airlines, and Philippine Airlines are now offering passengers the opportunity to reserve adjacent empty seats, essentially giving them an entire row.
Etihad Airways
Etihad allows passengers to bid on up to three adjacent seats. As explained by London-based influencer Maddie Borge, the bidding opens 35 hours before departure, with prices starting at $45. A “bid meter” helps travelers assess their chances. If successful, the passenger enjoys a full row for the duration of the flight—no extra cost if the bid fails.
Qantas
Qantas offers additional seats between 24 to 48 hours before departure for passengers flying solo in economy. Domestic seat prices range from $30 to $65, while international rates start at $45. If the seats are no longer available at boarding, a full refund is issued.
SriLankan Airlines
Passengers on SriLankan Airlines are informed via email 48 to 4 hours before departure about neighbour-free availability. The price depends on the route and demand, averaging around £50.
Philippine Airlines
Passengers flying economy can book up to three extra seats using a confirmation email link, at least six days before departure. Prices range from $30 to $120. Laureen Uy shared her own experience upgrading to “myPAL Seat Select Neighbor-Free” and enjoying a row to herself.
Lufthansa
Lufthansa passengers can pre-book neighbour-free seats through the Service Centre or buy them at the airport. Prices start at €59 and vary by flight.
With airlines becoming more flexible and innovative in their offerings, this neighbour-free option is a smart and affordable way to enjoy a spacious, more restful flight without splurging on first class.
