PPP will not allow Canal project: Sindh CM

22 April, 2025 16:58

Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Murad Ali Shah has announced that he will not allow the construction of canal projects at any cost.

In a statement, Shah said that he is ready to give every guarantee that the Sindh government and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) would not allow the canal project to be built with the power of the people.

Additionally, work on the canal project has been stalled since July 2024 and approval has been pending at ECNEC since November, and he is unhappy as to why the project has not been completed yet.

Moreover, the Prime Minister (PM) also understands the seriousness of the consequences of the canals. Hopefully, the Prime Minister will act fairly.

Furthermore, he extended that lawyers and nationalists must protest, but avoid hurting their people. The PPP and the protesters have the same goal. If we fail, then we will also protest in every way.

Earlier, the federal and Sindh governments have agreed to resolve the canal issue through negotiations on Sunday, GTV news reported.

On the instructions of Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif, Rana Sanaullah contacted Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon over the phone, in which Rana Sana said that he was ready to hold talks with Sindh on the issue of canals.

Rana Sanaullah added that Mian Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif have directed that Sindh’s reservations on the issue of canals be removed.

Sharjeel Memon said that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Sindh government have serious reservations about drawing canals from the Indus River. The PPP is also ready to negotiate with the federal government on the issue of canals.

However, he said that the PPP wants fair distribution of water for the people of Sindh under the 1991 agreement.
