The Center for International Strategic Studies (CISS) in Islamabad organized a two day international conference on “Nuclear Deterrence in the Age of Emerging Technologies,” which brought together a renowned collection of scholars and professionals from all over the world. The conference aimed to promote constructive debate on global strategic issues and share Pakistan’s policy ideas.
General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, NI (M), Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJSC), was the Chief Guest and delivered a keynote address on the first day of the conference. Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to continued dialogue and collaboration in addressing the challenges posed by emerging technologies. He also emphasized that peace and stability in South Asia can only be achieved through reciprocal measures for nuclear risk reduction and instituting a balance in a wider geostrategic construct.
The forum was attended by prominent international scholars from United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), National Institute for Deterrence Studies (NIDS), Australia, Ploughshare Foundation, Canada, China Arms Control and Disarmament Association (CACDA), Peking University, China, Center for Polar and Oceanic Studies, China, European Leadership Network (ELN), LSE School of Public Policy, Center for Energy and Security Studies (CENESS), Russia, Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IMEMO RAS), Saint Petersburg State University, Russia, Geneva Center for Security Policy, Switzerland, North Carolina State University, USA and Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
Earlier, CJCSC, who is on an official visit to Nigeria, called on H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, Defence Minister, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosum Oluyede, Chief of Army Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff and Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff of Nigeria.
According to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), during the separately-held meetings, both sides engaged in discussions on challenges faced by both countries especially in the domain of Counter Terrorism (CT) and areas of mutual interest, including security, defence cooperation, and the evolving international / regional landscape. Both sides reaffirmed the resolve to further enhance defence and military collaboration between both militaries.
The Nigerian civil and military leadership lauded the professionalism of Pakistan Armed Forces and acknowledged their sacrifices in fight against terrorism.
